CPD/CE Policy Summits
The Canadian Council on Continuing Education in Pharmacy (CCCEP) and the Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA) co-hosted the Continuing Professional Development/ Continuing Education (CPD/CE) Policy Summits: Advancing Innovation and Excellence in Pharmacy Practice. In order to achieve maximum stakeholder input, meetings were held in Edmonton, Halifax and Toronto. Participants from many stakeholder groups came together in these two-day interactive workshops to identify the ideal future of pharmacy CPD/CE and plan action steps for how to get there. Information gathered at the Summits will inform the development a new Guidelines and Criteria Policy on standards for CPD/CE programs in pharmacy.
CCCEP has used the information from the Summit to draft its revised accreditation policies and will be considering which Action Ideas to include in its new strategic plan. CCCEP has also had discussions with a number of organizations regarding taking a lead or co-lead role in addressing some of the suggested actions.
The Summary Report from the CPD/CE Policy Summit and full CPD/CE Policy Summit report.

New CPD program for pharmacy technicians in Quebec
Two colleges in Quebec (CEGEP de Rivière-du-Loup and Dawson College in Montreal), in collaboration with l’Association des pharmaciens des établissements de santé du Québec (APES) and other pharmacy organizations, are developing a continuing education program for pharmacy technicians currently working in both community and hospital pharmacies in Quebec. This online program will help pharmacy technicians develop or maintain the ability to handle sterile products and perform the ‘check-tech-check’ process where technicians verify the work of other technicians, releasing pharmacists from this role.

Diabetes Strategy for Pharmacists
The Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA) has developed a Diabetes Strategy for Pharmacists to provide education and tools to enable pharmacists to raise the level of care they provide to persons with diabetes, resulting in benefits for pharmacists and Canadians affected by this chronic disease. The strategy includes a set of diabetes practice guidelines specifically for pharmacists; a continuing education course that provides pharmacists with comprehensive tools and information to help patients better manage their diabetes; and Diabetes Pharmacist Champions to act as spokespersons, leaders and facilitators of the live workshops in their regions. The Diabetes Strategy for Pharmacists continues to grow. Having recently received new funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Strategy is looking to build-on and grow greater partnerships with stakeholders concerned with diabetes, create a network of stakeholders and develop additional tools related to cardiovascular disease and other chronic conditions related to diabetes care.
